This eLearning course is composed of two parts for healthcare providers to care for transgender and non-binary people.

This eLearning course is Part 1 of two modules containing the most critical and fundamental concepts related to the health care of transgender patients. Part 2 is Medical Visits and Sexual History-Taking Practices for Transgender and Non-Binary People.

About this Independent Study   

This activity was originally released on March 8, 2024 and is available for continuing education credit until March 7, 2026.     

Stigma and discrimination prevent transgender persons from accessing needed health care on a regular basisWhen they do access care, it is often sub-optimal because of providers’ lack of knowledge, preconceptions and bias based on the patient’s gender.  Additionally, the legal and social environment has become more hostile and intolerant toward transgender personsTools, guidelines and other resources covering provider self-reflection, supportive communication, informed consent, history-taking, primary care and more will be shared with participants for their further study and growth.

Physicians, advanced practice nurses, physicians’ assistants, RNs, LVN/LPNs, medical assistants, social workers, community health workers, administrators

Objectives

After completing this eLearning course, you will be able to:

  • Differentiate between dimensions of gender and sexuality
  • Explain the role discrimination, stigma, and unconscious bias have in affecting the health of transgender and non-binary clients
  • Create a plan to implement a welcoming environment for transgender and non-binary clients
  • Identify resources to increase skills, knowledge, and understanding in the care of transgender and non-binary clients 

Continuing Education 

Continuing Nursing Education (CNE)

Cardea Services is approved as a provider of nursing continuing professional development by Montana Nurses Association, an accredited approver with distinction by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.

Upon successful completion of this activity 1.0 contact hours will be awarded.

Continuing Medical Education (CME)

This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the accreditation requirements and policies of the California Medical Association (CMA). Cardea is accredited by the CMA to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

Cardea is approved by the Texas Department of State Health Services to provide continuing CHW hours in Texas, Certification #44 and continuing CHW-I hours in Texas, Certification #55.

    This program is Approved by the National Association of Social Workers (Approval # 886874323-4211) for 1 continuing education contact hours.
