The goal of this module is to increase awareness about issues related to mental health and substance use, so that you can talk about it with clients, families and your community.

About this Independent Study

This course was first released in January of 2020. It was reviewed and updated in March of 2023.

Who Should Take This Course 

This course is for community health workers and other health care staff who work in the community.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this program, the learner will be able to:

  1. Identify at least 2 signs & symptoms of mental illness
  2. Describe two ways substance use can be harmful
  3. Describe screening tools for mental health and substance use
  4. List steps CHWs can take to address mental health and substance use with their clients

This course offers 2.5 DSHS-Certified Continuing Education Hours for Community Health Workers (1 hour interpersonal, 1 hour Capacity-Building, .5 hour Knowledge Base)
