CHW Series: Navigating Mental Health Conversations

This live Zoom session will help CHWs start conversations about mental health and give CHWs tools to help their clients.

Description

The goal of this course is to provide Community Health Workers with knowledge and tools to navigate conversations about common mental health conditions, explore communication skills, identify local and national resources, and apply best practices when referring clients. This course consists of: 

  1. 1.5-hour required, eLearning prerequisite, Navigating Mental Health Conversations: A Guide for Community Health Workers (note: course resources are Texas-based). If you have completed the course already, you will not have to complete it again.
  2. 2.5-hour live Zoom session

After successfully completing both parts of the course, learners can receive 1.5 hours of Texas DSHS-certified CHW CEUs for the self-paced e-learning and 2.5 hours of CHW or CHW-I CEUs for the live session. 

Objectives

Participants will be able to: 

  • Share wisdom from professional and personal experience related to cultural humility, trauma, mental health, suicide, & self-care.
  • Self-assess strengths and growing edges of the 7 steps, and share tips for improvement, then debrief.
  • Explore a local and national resource, and best practices when referring clients.

Continuing Education

After successfully completing the course, learners may receive 2.5 hours of DSHS certified CHW or CHWI CEUs. This includes .5 hour Service Coordination, 1 communication skills,  and 1 Interpersonal skills.

Cardea is approved by the Texas Department of State Health Services to provide continuing CHW hours in Texas, Certification #44 for CHW and #50 for CHWIs.

Course Completion

  • Learners are expected to complete all parts of the course, including the prerequisite course, in order to receive your certificate of completion
  • The instructor-led portion of the course on Zoom is interactive, and learners must participate to complete it
  • The maximum number of participants allowed into the live Zoom course is 45.

  • Microphone capabilities (video preferred)
  • A space without distractions

Complete the e-learning prerequisite course.

2. Live Zoom Session

Apr 22

Attend the live session from 9:00am to 11:00am Central

3. Post-Work

Apr 29

Complete post-work to receive your certificate of completion.
