This course will equip healthcare providers with information about approaches to recognize the widespread impact of trauma and to identify the signs and symptoms of trauma in clients, staff, and others involved in the system.  Part of the activity will also cover how to integrate knowledge about trauma into policies, procedures and practices in order to actively resist re-traumatization and prevent vicarious trauma, burnout, and compassion fatigue. 

Who Should Take This Course  

Nurses, counselors, social workers, community health workers, navigators and other staff at healthcare agencies that work with clients who may have experienced trauma.  

Learning Objectives 

By the end of this training, participants will be able to:

• Describe types of trauma and trauma’s effect on the brain

• Discuss the impact of trauma on behavior and health outcomes

• Describe how the six principles of trauma-informed care could lead to better client experiences during clinic visits

• Discuss individual and organizational protective factors that can prevent vicarious trauma in staff
