About this Independent Study Path  

This activity was originally released on July 1, 2022 and is available for continuing education credit until June 30, 2024.      

Great Minds is a project sponsored by the WCAAP to support Primary Care Providers across the state to improve care of families with infants and young children. The goal of this series of courses is to introduce how to integrate Universal Developmental Screening (UDS) and referrals to early intervention (EI) into workflow, increase the number of patients screened, help parents understand the importance of early intervention, and highlight key resources for families.

Who Should Take This Course

Primary care physicians, pediatricians, and medical staff in clinics that treat infants and young children in Washington State.

Objectives

After completing this eLearning series of courses, you will be able to:

  • Explain developmental screening in practices which serve children, in accordance with AAP policy statements and Bright Futures guidelines. 
  • Explain proper documentation, coding, and billing of screening tools 
  • Identify local community resources for evaluation and intervention 
  • Explain developmental screening in practices which serve children, in accordance with AAP policy statements and Bright Futures guidelines. 
  • Explain motivational interviewing skills for discussions with families about developmental milestones, UDS screenings 
  • Explain communication skills when explaining to families about early intervention and screening tools  
  • Explain developmental screening in practices which serve children, in accordance with AAP policy statements and Bright Futures guidelines. 
  • Explain effective strategies to catch missed screens   
  • Describe what populations are most likely to get missed by screeners 

Continuing Education 

Continuing Medical Education (CME)

This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the accreditation requirements and policies of the California Medical Association (CMA) through the joint providership of Cardea and Washington Chapter of American Academy of Pediatrics. Cardea is accredited by the CMA to provide continuing medical education for physicians.
