HIV Navigation in Texas Prerequisite Courses

This Learning Path serves as a prerequisite for the HIV Navigation in Texas Training events.
Enrollment in this Path does not ensure attendance at a live or blended HIV Navigation in Texas Learning Session.

Target Audience:

The workforce receiving Texas Department of State Health Services funds or resources to support HIV testing, disease intervention services, PrEP navigation and/or Ryan White care and treatment services.

Required to complete the series:

  • All DSHS funded staff who provide or supervise
    • HIV testing
    • HIV navigation
    • PrEP navigation
  • Within first year of employment, all DSHS staff funded to provide
    • Public health follow-up services (DIS)
    • HIV care and treatment services

Path Components

This path consists of eight required courses, each between 10-20 minutes long, and can be completed in a few sessions.

Here is a list of the goals:

1. Introduction to HIV Navigation in Texas

This short self-paced eLearning module is the first in a series of short lessons that will help you learn about the efforts to reduce the transmission of HIV in Texas.

2. Social Determinants of Health

In this short course, learners will discuss the social determinants of health, and discuss how social determinants of health affect a client’s ability to link to care.

3. Typical Client Needs

In this course, learners will explore the many needs a client may face.

4. People First Language

In this course, learners will discuss what people-first language is and why it matters.

5. Decreasing Stigma by Using Sexual Health Language

In this course, learners will discuss the importance of using sexual health language.

6. Trauma-Informed Care

In this course, learners will explore the components of trauma and how being trauma informed increases retention in care.

7. Motivational Interviewing Made Easy

This short module serves as a review of Motivational Interviewing (MI). MI is a proven way to work with people to help them make changes or create plans that can help them in their lives.

8. Status Neutral Navigation: Introduction to a New Way of Thinking About HIV

This short course introduces the concept of status neutral navigation and how it helps to prevent the transmission and acquisition of HIV.

9. Gender and Sexual Diversity Review

This is a short refresher of information you may have learned in other gender and sexual diversity courses.
